Anu Oil: Nasal Oil for Your Sensory Organs

Anu oil is one of the best medicines described for Nasya Karma in various classics like Charak Samhita, Sushruta Samhita, and Ashtang Hridaya. Nasya is an Ayurvedic treatment procedure which refers to instillation of oil drops into nasal cavity. Anu oil consists of 27 ingredients such as sandalwood (Chandan), Aegle marmelos (bilva), Terminalia chebula (harde), cardamom and other herbs. Majority of the ingredients of Anu oil have light and sharp properties, and hot potency which facilitate cleansing effect (srotoshodhak) and balances vata, pitta, and kapha doshas.

Action and Benefits

When anu oil is administered through nasal route, it passes via Shringatak Marma (located at the junction of the eye brows and is associated with all sense organs), enters all the sense organs and strengthens them. Modern principles state that medicines administered nasally can affect eye, facial skin, ears, nose, and oral cavity.

Anu Oil improves memory, sense of smell, and functions of four sense organs including nose, ear, eyes, and tongue as per Ayurveda. It can be used as a preventive medicine to keep a sharp eyesight. It increases circulation in the head therefore, it is best used in the treatment of hair fall, and premature graying of hair. Anu oil is usually used to strengthen and improve voice quality. As per research, nasya karma with the use of anu oil may be beneficial for early cure of sinusitis and also cervical spondylitis which is a degenerative condition of the cervical spine presenting features like pain and stiffness at the back of neck. Another research has stated its efficacy in dry eye syndrome which is caused due to lack of lubrication on the surface of the eye. In Ayurvedic classics, migraine (ardhavabhedaka) which is caused due to emotional stress, anxiety, and other psychological factors, is suggested to treat by administering anu oil. It also helps in all types of nervous disorders, which occurs due to the dysfunction of the brain cells.

Method of administration

In Ayurvedic scriptures, instillation of nasal drops is recommended in daily regimen for three seasons namely, monsoon, autumn, and spring. For daily practice, consult your doctor for right advice.

In a standard therapy, firstly, the person is given a gentle head and face massage with hot poultice (avoid eye lids and eyes), this clears up the congestion present in the nasal cavity. Later, he or she should lie straight with head facing upwards, arms and legs extended, and head should be tilted back. Finally, anu oil is administered into each nostril with the help of cotton swab or dropper simultaneously blocking the other nostril. It is administered on alternate days for seven days or depending on several factors such as dosha imbalance, condition of disease and others while, for healthy people, 2 drops in each nostril is advised.

Precautions

Overuse of anu oil may cause burning sensation in nasal cavity, headache, and salivation, therefore, it must be administered on advice of a doctor. Do not lift your head as soon as the drops are administered, lie down with head tilted back for 5 minutes. Avoid pouring water on head after administration. It may cause a feeling of nausea or vomiting if it is used after having meal, therefore, it is better to use it on empty stomach or in the morning.

Specially, in upcoming monsoon season which is known for accumulation of kapha dosha in the body, administration of anu oil can be beneficial for those having history of nasal congestion and chronic sinusitis.
